Fishing Reports May 2011

Windy weather, kokes and lake trout snubbery

Tue, 05/31/2011

Fishing has been great when you can fish through the wind. Kokanee are ona mad dog bite whilst lakers continue to be tough- it's all about the windows. The wind has been so bad I actually can't get a satellite upload for reports- but now we have some decent weather so the reports will be more steady. M-day was quieter than usual but decent boat traffic and Sunday everyone cleaned house. The lake is worth the trip right now so save up and make a weekend out of it- I'll help who I can to get the price per pound in check but be prepared to fish through windy afternoons. Talk at 'cha!

Beautiful weather, catching follows

Tue, 05/31/2011

Koke spank from mid lake to lake fork. The water has finally begin to rise. Some decent lakers caught by associated clowns. Greens and yellows for kokanee suicide baits- 3 colors better than downs. Dead flat calm- m-day goers got robbed!

Weather, but great fishing

Sun, 05/29/2011

Mad Dog kokanee bite today with a great crew. We gave lakers a shot and got denied with one good hit. kokes have infultrated the lake and the bite was 6 miles long or better- the wind is blowing so bad I can't upload pics through the crappy ISP right now- it's great, but it's supposed to snow- oh well.

Wind,Wind,Wind, Kokanee, Lake trout

It's all here, the holiday, insane weather and fish. The koke troll is off the hook. My boat has been concentrating on macs only right and the biomass is around, biters are slowly coming together- look for a change in the bite and it's go time. Also, very important. I aided two distressed boaters today in very rough conditions. If you need help, call me. I'm always on the water and will get you help faster than most organiziations. Keep my number in the phone and call for help- I'm a friend on the lake as well as a fisherman and guide- disclaimer: you may have to wait until we reel in the big one, but we'll get to ya!
Good luck and fish early!

Taylor Fishing Report- Ice Out!

Fri, 05/27/2011

Honest Angler Report:
Got to do Ice out at Taylor... had to shore launch... trolled along the ice edge and caught active fish, anchored up along the ice and did well with jigs and sucker meat. All 2 and a half days we caught only Mac's. Trolling amongst ice bergs is fun, glad it's a rare occasion...see ya out there... Anthony

Better weather and fishing, but the wind has come

Thu, 05/26/2011

Worked this morning on a day off with no risers- lots of entertainment though. Koke fishing has been off the charts mid-lake! That's the place to be- anything goes! The wind is here for the weekend, so anglers, fish early, sleep in the afternoon- the 9am launch will get you less fish- by the time you pattern up, the wind will kill you! Happy M-day, we'll be out there everyday, still. Good luck!

Great Weather, Good Fishing

Wed, 05/25/2011

The weather finally gave us a break after scraping ice off the windshield this morning. There were plenty of fish and the crew got to catch one. John landed this nice 26lber and I followed up later with this 25 lber. Thank the fish gods. We will recieve our punishment tomorrow with the 30mph winds in the forecast! Keep smiling!

Will it ever end

Tue, 05/24/2011

Erratic weather and cold water has been killing 'my' bite. Small fish have been running the show in the trophy quest lately which has been tough for clients and the guide. Kokes have been strong at Cebolla but we must seek big game whilst in season. Stay tuned.

Wind, snow, rain; Hot and Cold, then Sun

Sun, 05/22/2011

We had the WyKoff crew for the am hustle to spank Macks and worked hard with no raises. The fish gathered in a negative mood and didn't take a bite. Heard of two fish caught between 5 boats yesterday on all day trips- ouch. The afternoon trip with the Marrs crew found a bite in the narrows and had our fill of kokes, browns and lakers. The wind blew 15-20 from 5am to 9p yesterday and was tough! Now today, dead calm sunny skies, but a day off- there's always a bite somewhere and I hope anglers today find it today!

Mixed bag spank session

Fri, 05/20/2011

We had the Ramsay crew out today and the action started to pick up. No hogs landed but we were thrilled to hook into some trophy-to-bes ; 11, 6.25, 4 and 3 lber today. Mixed bag salmon browns and lakers brought the afternoon bite with the wind working against us! Great crew, good fishing. Water temps remain low and fish are disgruntled- aren't we all sometimes though?

Browns and dink lakers, and snow

Thu, 05/19/2011

Found the browns and small lakers but no slabs for the archives. Snow, hail and mixed rain kicked off the day. Fisherman Hugh and I gave it hell with no avail. The good news is tomorrow's another day!

Decent morning, though everyday you fish is great

Wed, 05/18/2011

Spanked a few real nice browns this morning and a 5lb laker. The real catch was speaking to an honest fisherman who made me see all angles of the lake trout bag limit and fishing methods, and an appreciation for fishing on Blue Mesa Reservoir, guiding or not. A couple things I learned.
1. From a strictly sport fishing point of view, myself and fisherman alike who release all lake trout, would like to see all big trophy fish go back. This comes from a point of view that 'we've already caught a bunch and would like to catch more.'
2.The DOW deems lake trout as problem right now and will net x number of fish to achieve their goals. This upsets fisherman who haven't caught a trophy or others that asume they will catch less. This is not in our power to change so opinons are null.
3. There are the fisherman that catch lake trout for enjoyment and keep them for table fair. This is their right as a license holder.
4. At the end of the day, the legal bag limit is what the state sets and how you catch them is bound by laws; opinions are subjective. I respect that and are not bias to different fishing methods- and I retract any comments which may have offened some of these parties- there was never any ill intensions.
5. I am a fisherman first and have been for about 26 years.
My favorite method of fishing is the method that catches. As a guide, my point of view has changed at times mostly for personal gain, forgetting about the others that also work hard on the lake to catch a trophy and a meal by the means available to them.
This business has been very good to me, as well as the many skilled anglers that have helped me be a better fisherman and a better person.
My reports are intended to help people catch and ignite the desire to come to Blue Mesa and Fish- that's all. Good luck to all the fisherman on the lake today and remember, you have to fish to catch!

Weather Time

Wed, 05/18/2011

Got snowed off the boat this afternoon- tomorrow looks like the same- time to pull out the thermals!

Fun in the Sun, then done

Tue, 05/17/2011

No rises today, but fish are around. The wind and weather is back so be prepared for snow and rain, business as usual. This pic was from yesterday, the sky is now black.......... but fishable. Thanks Anthony for the pics

Northwest Jet Boat

Went fishing and ended up catching

Mon, 05/16/2011

Nice 39" 35lb fish caught today- the only bad news is there wasn't a client on the boat- that's how it goes. Kokes have been decent around at 30fow and lakers are around as well. Good weather is making it easier but it's still hard work to catch the hogs!

Catch and release lake trout fishing

Mon, 05/16/2011

This fish was released back into the livewell, then released into shallower water shortler after.

Great weather, salmon followed

Sun, 05/15/2011

No big fish this morning but mopped up on kokes and others did too! Yeah Blue Mesa!

Another Gale Force Blow

Sat, 05/14/2011

Dead calm and balmy this morning. No big fish caught for me on a day off. The mixed species troll was good in the narrows for kokes, browns and lakers. I headed in to clean the boat and get ready for a long week when 30mph winds with 40mph gusts destroyed the lake- lots of boats still out when I left- hope they made it- be sure to have a worthy craft out there. Anyway, not a crazy day but kokanee for dinner makes up for it.

Trophy Lake Trout Fishing & the one that got away!

Fri, 05/13/2011

We had Charlie and his crew out today to catch big lakers and we hooked one. It ran from us, than at us, than at the motor and snapped. The first break off of the season sadly, but that means energy levels are up. We finished up with a troll on kokes, bows, browns and small lakers and called it good. Great crew and glad to have ya back!

Snowing and Blowing

Thu, 05/12/2011

Didn't make it out yet. The snow and 25knot gusts left me staring out the window since 5am. Hope it'll lay down.

Back to the Grind!

Wed, 05/11/2011

Time off is over and we're back for a big grind. Reports have been good around the lake with all species responding to well presented baits. Snow wind and rain have been pounding for the last 24 and I'm not sold on good weather yet. Reports starting tomorrow- good luck!

Good Fishing, Good Weather

Mon, 05/09/2011

The tourney was a success for many of the persistent anglers and the weather was decent. Fishing is getting better and we are looking forward to spring. There will be some snow in the forecast but it can't last forever. We'll be fishing again on Wed so everything until then is just filler- good luck

Thanks to the Fish Gods

Fri, 05/06/2011

Taking a Few days off. It was a long ice off with hot and cold days, but great crews and lots learned. The crew rocked today and got a hawg- 26lbs- thank the Fish Gods. Browns were slow on the cast, hot on the troll for some anglers. Good luck to the tourney guys tomorrow- See ya on Wed.

Slow Fishing

Thu, 05/05/2011

It's been a slow week for BMF. The current excuses are insane weather, 30knot north winds, 18 degree lows and water cooling more than warming. The browns are doing what they can for us but have dropped deep, in deep water. Iola will prolly have steady trout fishing. Browns today down to 89fow, lakers spotted but denied baits. The good news is tomorrow is always a new day. I can't wait!

Lake Update

Tue, 05/03/2011

The sites have been down, but are back. Fishing is slow, cold temps though seeing fish. Hang in there, everyday is a new day to catch.

Blue Snow Mesa Snow. Snow Snow Snow

Sun, 05/01/2011

Fish Gods were good to us yesterday, and the snow gods are here today........... well, it doesn't bother me on a day off! We had a good crew out yesterday and Bob and Jerry did the time. We were rewarded with a good fish, 16.5lbs and the north winds shut down our bite again! Anyway, this fish is still swimming and will hopefully make it to trophy status. This can not be said for over 400lbs of lake trout that I know of that have been killed by patient, skilled anglers. Guys between you and the netting this trophy resource will disappear. So give 'em a break and leave them for future generations of fishermen- so, after the lake trout hunt we crushed browns in lake fork and ran to the boat ramp as temps plummeted into the 40's- yikes! We'll see ya out there.
